The Art of Fabric Making

Understanding fabrics: jersey, fleece, and how they’re made

Fabric terminology can be confusing because different words are often used to describe how a fabric is made, how it is constructed, and how it feels once finished. These are three distinct concepts:

  • knitting technique

  • fabric structure

  • finishing treatment

Understanding the difference helps clarify common terms like jersey and fleece.

The key clarification:
Jersey and fleece are not two different knitting techniques.

Jersey refers to a knit structure.
It describes how the fabric is knitted, resulting in a smooth surface with natural stretch.

Fleece refers to a finishing treatment.
It is created by brushing the inside of a knitted fabric to make it softer, warmer, and more insulating.

In short:
Jersey describes how the fabric is constructed, while fleece describes a finish applied after knitting.

Fabric Creation Sequence (Jersey → Fleece)

  1. Knitting the fabric – Yarn is knitted into a base structure, commonly jersey.

  2. Base fabric (jersey) – This smooth, stretchy fabric can be used as-is for T-shirts or sweatshirts.

  3. Finishing (fleece) – The inside of the jersey is brushed to create a soft, fluffy, and insulating texture, resulting in fleece.

Key clarification:
Jersey and fleece are not different knitting techniques. Fleece is a finish applied to a knitted fabric like jersey, not a separate knit.

Tooltip / short version:

Fleece is made by brushing jersey fabric to make it warmer and softer.
