What makes a sweatshirt?
Sweatshirts are usually made from knitted fabrics such as jersey, French terry or fleece, cut and sewn into the finished garment. They are associated with casualwear and sportswear, with styles ranging from crew necks to hooded and zip-up designs.
The fabric makes a difference: loopback terry, brushed fleece and lightweight jersey do not all feel the same. Check the individual piece's composition and fit rather than assuming every sweatshirt is thick, warm or loose-fitting.
What do we mean by knitwear?
In clothing collections, knitwear commonly refers to sweaters, cardigans and similar garments with a knitted construction. Pieces can be knitted to shape or assembled from knitted panels. They range from fine, smooth knits to chunky, textured styles, so visible stitches are not the only way to recognise them.
Knitwear is not necessarily wool: cotton, synthetic fibres and blends are also used. Warmth, softness and care requirements depend on the yarn, fabric structure and garment design.
Fabric construction: woven or knitted?
We often use “weave” to describe a fabric's texture, but weaving and knitting are different methods. Woven fabric is made by interlacing lengthwise yarns, called the warp, with crosswise yarns, called the weft. Plain weave, twill and satin are examples of woven structures.
Knitted fabric is made from interlocking loops of yarn. Those loops generally allow more natural give than a comparable woven structure, although the fibres, construction and finishing also affect stretch and feel. Both typical sweatshirt fabrics and sweater knitwear use knitted structures rather than a woven weave.
For sweatshirts, jersey commonly has a smooth face, French terry has loops on the reverse, and brushed sweatshirt fleece has a soft, raised inner surface. Sweater knitwear may use plain stitches, ribbing or cable patterns to create different textures. These are examples of construction, not specifications shared by every garment.
The difference, simply put
Sweatshirts are knitted too. The distinction is usually between a casual sweatshirt made from fabrics such as jersey or fleece and a sweater-style garment sold as knitwear, not between knitted and non-knitted fabric.

Choose a sweatshirt for a relaxed streetwear look with jeans or joggers. Try a knitted sweater when you want a different texture or a more dressed-up casual finish. Neither category is automatically warmer or better quality: compare the actual materials, construction and fit.
